Because the product details text on the Amazon pages need updating to take the new release date into account for From Shattered Stars, minor corrections are being uploaded to the existing Kindle eBooks at the same time. The paperback editions will be updated with the new interior content, none of which is incredibly compelling.
List of the Dead / Books 1–3 Omnibus (Both rev. 1.08)
From Shattered Stars (Rev. 1.08)
The Kindle update policy has changed, and existing customers will not receive updates for such trivial changes. The new Kindle versions will be available to new customers tomorrow, with the paperbacks expected to be updated by the day after.
Additionally, it has been discovered that links to Createspace stores now simply redirect to Amazon. Createspace links have therefore been removed from this site. If you don't use Amazon, you can buy signed paperbacks on the official store.
As mentioned yesterday on the Facebook page, there has been a universal update to all of the Armada Wars Kindle eBooks. The purpose of the update was to:
The new editions are a huge improvement over previous versions, and the eBooks have never looked so good. Read on to learn more!
The recently announced updates to the existing Armada Wars Kindle eBook titles are all live.
The Ravening Deep has a minor plot-based correction, and quite a few tweaks for readability. Definitely worth getting! And if you own the Books 1–3 Omnibus, that volume contains the same changes.
Steal from the Devil and List of the Dead just have a few corrected typos and some cosmetic tweaks.
If your Kindle account doesn't have automatic updates turned on, details on how to obtain the updates can be found in the last section of the FAQ page.
In the run-up to the delayed release of From Shattered Stars, many of you will no doubt be planning to re-read the first three books of the series. If you're reading on Kindle, or using the Kindle app on another device, then before you start you may wish to update to the latest versions.
Steal from the Devil and List of the Dead have only minor changes, however The Ravening Deep has some corrections which put right a very silly mistake that slipped into the battle for Ramm Stallahad.
During that fight, Admiral Betombe and his task force use their wormhole generators in a novel way, with the intention of making life difficult for the intruding Shaeld Hrathan fleet. The problem is... the way I originally wrote that scene, interdiction had already begun throughout the system. So all of the admiral's ships' GNGs should have stalled.
That sequence has now been fixed, and a number of other minor edits have been made to clarify sentences and paragraphs. The Books 1–3 Omnibus gets the same improvements, of course, as do the paperback versions. All volumes have also had their back matter updated to reflect the delayed release of FSS.
If you are uncertain about how to download the updated eBooks to your device, please refer to the final section of the FAQ page.
All the updates are now available for existing customers. You will know if you have the latest versions by checking the back matter — the release date given for From Shattered Stars will have changed to 2017.
In the spirit of mutual support between indie authors, I've just uploaded new Kindle versions of all of the current Armada Wars volumes (including the Omnibus, which is sort of current because it's on preorder right now.)
What's different? They all now include a new section at the back called You May Also Like.
The first book to be added to this section is The Calypsis Project, by Canadian author Brittany M. Willows.
The Calypsis Project is the first volume in a duology (with the second part, TCP: Rebirth, due soon), and will also get an additional prequel volume, TCP: Pulse.
From today, anyone buying Kindle copies of SFTD, LOTD, TRD, or the current Omnibus will get the recommendation. Existing customers will find it appearing in their Kindle editions if they refresh on the next update I make (which will likely be the update to front/back matter when IDOD is released).
I know a lot of authors are reluctant to do things like this, because increased file size means reduced royalties. But really, what's a few pages in kilobytes? Also, you can offset this by using affiliate referral links. So literally everyone wins!
Come on indies, let's all work together here :D
Kindle updates were released today for all the current Armada Wars novels: Steal from the Devil, List of the Dead, and The Ravening Deep. The changes include updated front and back matter, tidying, improved spacing around some elements, drop-caps at the start of chapters, and a few spelling and punctuation tweaks. If you haven't already upgraded, Steal from the Devil will also be updated to the recently released third edition, which includes some new material.
If you have automatic updates turned on you will probably find the updates have been delivered already. if not, just go to your Amazon account and navigate to "Kindle > Manage your Content and Devices" to send the updates.
The web site has been lavished with attention this week. In the past day, the following changes have gone live:
See the post from the other day to read about the other changes made this week.
It's been two and a half years now since Steal from the Devil first came into the public arena, and a lot has happened since then. Reading back, it's easy for me to spot quirky little annoyances, or see things which could have been used more fully to portend future events.
I've therefore made a number of changes to the book, which collectively constitute an upgrade to the Third Edition (but don't worry — I've not gone all George Lucas on it). This edition will be available as a Kindle update and a new paperback within about a week (see yesterday's blog article about the new editions), and it is already available as the default Kindle version for new customers.
The editorial changes are as follows:
As you may have gathered from a previous post, the current paperbacks of the Armada Wars novels are undergoing a slight evolution.
For one thing, the matte effect covers are being replaced by traditional glossy covers. The proofs have arrived today and I have to say they look much better — colours are rendered more accurately and consistently, text layout and appearance has been improved, the "Armada Wars" title from the Kindle editions has been added, and they generally just look smashing.
Those paperbacks are populating to Amazon right now.
The other big news is that Steal from the Devil will be entering its third edition with this iteration. Unlike previous revisions, this one will add some new text: some dialogue, some prose, some inner thoughts. And a few minor tweaks and corrections of course. This update will also be issued to Kindle customers.
Finally, as was mentioned in the previous post, this update marks the end for the larger and more expensive "standard editions".
Due to the test file behaving better than it should have done, two tiny issues were found in the Kindle version of The Ravening Deep. They do NOT affect the story in any way, and the update to fix them is totally optional.
The update fixes:
If you have turned on automatic updates for your Kindle content, the update will download automatically. If you have not, then you can go to the "Manage My Content and Settings" page on the Amazon web site, and press the big 'update' button there.
