Structure and Purpose
Forge Ruinous was originally constructed on Lopama for defence purposes, back when the planet was originally believed to have a productive long-term future as a colony world. Since it had been made clear by the Resourcing Bureau that the planet would not be receiving expensive space defences — which in any case were not particularly powerful at the time — a conventional approach was decided upon. Forge Ruinous was built as a ground-based fortress intended to protect the major settlements.
Even while colonisation efforts on Lopama halted in stages, and eventually ceased altogether, Forge Ruinous did indeed turn back several invading forces. The fortress was so formidable that when orbital platforms became a viable technology, nobody on the planet deemed them worth the resource cost.
Forge Ruinous was never conquered or breached by conventional means. The humorous fact of the matter is that not every invasion or occupation that smashed itself apart against the black walls of the fortress need even have tangled with its defences; to their great detriment, they did so merely because it was there. Its very presence seemed to demand a futile, frontal assault.
Forge Ruinous is a huge structure, fashioned from near-seamless blocks of the local black stone. It is virtually impregnable to all but the most powerful of attacks, and features tiered ranks of ground and air defences.
Modifications were made to the original structure in the early 3700s, when the defunct military base was part-converted for use as a bioweapons manufacturing station. The interior was retrofitted for that purpose, and landing pads were installed on the shoulders of one of the upper levels. At least one lift shaft was also installed, allowing resources and technology to be brought inside through a bunker with a pair of interlocking doors. That feature was sited close to the new landing pads.
Deep inside Forge Ruinous are kilometres of grid-like tunnels and corridors, allowing access to various cavernous spaces. Some of these are now used for warehousing, others for manufacture, and one such space — located behind the building's central control room — serves as a hub which oversees and guides all ongoing research projects.

Notable Events
After discussing the problem of Voice and the stolen Atmospheric Dispersal Warheads with Elm Caden, Eyes and Ears invigilator Quisten Leksis pledged to discover if Forge Ruinous had been infiltrated in the same fashion as other facilities. At the time, the installation was being referred to only as 'Site Bravo' (→TRD).
It is now believed that as a result of the enquiries made by Leksis, a platoon from Tanker Regiment's Buzzard Company was despatched to investigate Forge Ruinous. The exact method by which the orders were delivered remains as mysterious as it has been controversial, and the events which took place when the unit arrived on Lopama are currently unknown (→FSS, FR).
In April of 3745 ELC, Elm Caden travelled to Forge Ruinous aboard the Night's Shadow. His intention was to discover what had become of the staff working at the facility, and to protect Imperial interests and assets from Voice (→FSS).

On arriving at Forge Ruinous, Caden and his companions realised quickly that the facility had indeed been breached. Located outside was a CAGA lander which was identified quickly as belonging to Buzzard Company's lost platoon. When Caden and his team entered the facility they discovered the fate of the Buzzard platoon: they had all become Thralls. A pitched battle between Tankers ended with the elimination of every Rasa present, and was followed by the location of Herik Pammon in the research control hub (→FSS).
Pammon revealed that Forge Ruinous was infiltrated in the early phases of Voice's master plan, and it was later inferred that the facility had since been producing industrial quantities of the Rasa virus. The virus appeared there in several variants — believed to target different species — and was being used as a payload in the ADWs stolen by Voice (→FSS).
Forge Ruinous is currently protected from orbit by Imperial Navy resources.
