"Carpe noctem." |
Overview
The Imperial Navy is the space superiority wing of the Imperial Combine. Its organisational motto is Carpe noctem — "Seize the night".
The navy utilises a number of ship types, which are replaced on a rolling basis according to Fleet Command's design roadmap. |
Administration
The functions of Fleet Command are carried out largely from Fort Sol in the Solar system. It is here that High Admiral Audrene Bel-Taulon oversees the seated Admiralty, although for security reasons fleet's Commander Operations is based elsewhere.
The armada is divided into administrative units called fleets, which are identified numerically and are under the control of the Admiralty. There is one senior Fleet Admiral commanding each of the fleets, more often than not physically commanding that fleet's flagship.
Fleets are usually further divided into administrative command units, with those subunits placed under the control of Fleet Captains and junior Fleet Admirals.
While they are docked in a space station such as a fortress, or under the command and control of any other Imperial fleet facility, authority over ships is traditionally ceded to that facility's supervising Commodore.

In Peace
The armada is usually spread out across the galaxy, patrolling specific star systems or exploring the vast reaches of space between the many worlds. Fleets are often diverted for all manner of missions, ranging from the destruction of potentially threatening asteroids, to the defence of Imperial territory from hostile forces.
Each fleet has a default sentry location, which is used as a rally point when the fleet has been split into task forces. For example, the default sentry location of the First Fleet is Earth.
Both Eyes and Ears and CAGA frequently take part in joint operations with the Navy. In fact, at any given time, it is unusual to find a fleet that is not carrying the representatives of one of these bodies.
During peacetime, Fleet Command will direct the various admirals to whatever tasks may be required of them, other than their standard patrol duties.

In War
Although it is the High Admiral who signs off on all orders from the Admiralty, ultimate responsibility for the live deployment and strategic utilisation of all fleets falls to Commander Operations.
The admirals commanding live fleets will be responsible for translating strategic decisions from Fleet Command into operational tasks.
Fleets may be split into separate task forces or combined into battle groups. In such an event it is the privilege of the more senior commander to determine which officer will lead such forces.
