Overview

Occre Brant left his homeworld of High Cerin to attend the Imperial War College on Kelvestyr, where he studied in the intelligence pathway. After graduating from the War College he attended the Eyes and Ears Academy, less formally known as the 'Big Big Brain'.

Brant is an Eyes and Ears intelligence operator, but he was first posted to Fort Kosling as an unranked field agent in 3734 ELC. He became an intelligence operator in 3737. His duties now include local data collation, and the administration of the tasks and duties which Eyes and Ears allocate to other personnel. Brant enjoys his work, and the ethical quandaries of the more senior monitor role do not appeal to him.

Occre's parents took inspiration for his forename from the Maumblas language of the Hurshene species. The original word refers to the idea of objects splintering against a defensive structure.

Personality

Brant is bound by a sense of universal justice and an internal code of honour, and he does his best to remain fair, tolerant, patient, gracious and attentive.

He has come to believe that in the intelligence world, it pays to have solid principles that can act as anchors. He is pragmatic, loyal, and uncompromising in the face of threats. He demonstrates great integrity and discretion. His key belief is that it is essential to always do the right thing.

Brant has no religious beliefs and does not subscribe to any superstitions. His personal philosophy is that he should cause no harm, and endeavour to leave people and circumstances in a better state than he found them.

Occre Brant firmly believes that the Imperial Combine is the most successful human civilisation of all time. However, he also recognises that the society has its winners and losers due to the way in which it is administered.

Brant is just as happy with men as he is with women, and possibly prefers them. He avoids casual encounters because in his line of work they place him and others at risk. Due to his role, he is very tight-lipped about his previous relationships. He has hinted several times that he is attracted to Elm Caden.

Brant's main day-to-day colleague is
Peras Tirrano, a vindictive and angry operator who Brant believes should not even be in the role. Although she is competent and effective, he thinks her personality makes her a liability. He spends a great deal of time avoiding her advances, since Tirrano genuinely sees him as her future husband.

Notable Events

Brant remained at Fort Kosling until its destruction at the hands of Amarist Naeb in 3745. Just prior to that disaster, his experience with Naeb made him one of the first Imperial agents known to have survived direct contact with a Rasa (→SFTD).

Until 22nd March 3745 Brant's direct supervisor was Gordl Branathes, a monitor acting temporarily above his pay grade. Branathes was a career bureaucrat, both cavalier and superficial, and Brant had little time for him. After the destruction of Fort Kosling Brant was reassigned to Fort Laeara, along with most of the other Kosling staff. There he identified Branathes as a possible Rasa, and later realised that the monitor had fled Laeara and travelled in secret to Meccrace Prime (→LOTD).

Brant and Tirrano travelled together to Aldava, aboard the hauler Spring Eternal, in order to extract the information broker Joarn Kages from the surface of the planet. There they witnessed Aldava being glassed from orbit (→LOTD).

Brant has been a single point of contact for Elm Caden almost since the very beginning of Caden's investigation into the Rasa threat. He now acts as a liaison between Caden and Eyes and Ears. He also relays to Caden new discoveries about the Rasas and Shaeld Hratha as they are discovered by the research vessels Vavilov and Lovelace (→TRD).

On Caden's return from the Perseus arm, Brant has resumed both his informative updates and his unabashed flirting. Caden has recently passed information to Brant suggesting that Shaeld Hratha may be hiding aboard Fort Laeara (→FSS).
