OverviewMarch Bel-Askis is the Eyes and Ears invigilator for the Herses system. He resides on Ramm Stallahad — his homeworld — and usually works from an office on the Fort Herses battle station.
Bel-Askis is elderly and suffers with reduced mobility. He has steadfastly refused to use medical augmentations or cybernetic prostheses to compensate for what he sees as the perfectly natural ageing process. Notable EventsIn early 3745 ELC, Bel-Askis chaired a meeting at which invigilators from across the Imperial Combine discussed the Herros situation. Despite his age, it had been a long time since such a duty fell to him, and he was proud to head the table. During the meeting, Bel-Askis was responsible for disseminating information about the attack on Gemen Station, as well as a number of other more minor incidents, and asking the other invigilators to give their views on what parties might be responsible (→SFTD).
Bel-Askis finds his colleague Sashan Geneve politically naive, but strategically gifted and "beyond enthusiastic". He is amused by the unstated rivalry between his colleagues Silane Creid and Quisten Leksis (→SFTD). Bel-Askis was present at a meeting in which Eyes and Ears debriefed Elm Caden on the Rasa threat, and shared information of their own. He felt compelled, albeit reluctantly, to reveal to Caden several secrets which the Empire had been guarding for decades, including the truth about the historical devastation of Woe Tantalum (→TRD). During an attempted assassination of all high-ranking Eyes and Ears personnel, Bel-Askis escaped death only due to a defective explosive device. Reasoning that there were likely Rasa infiltrators around him capable of finishing the job, he then fled on the cargo hauler Leo Fortune (→TRD). Bel-Askis was frustrated to find that one of their monitors, Hywen, refused to evacuate from Fort Herses in the wake of the bombing attempt (→ASTTS). While still remaining hidden from public view, Bel-Askis was one of the people most instrumental in encouraging Fleet Command to launch Operation Sabre against the occupied world Palanda Ire. This was due to the faith he had in his monitor Hywen, and their own trust in field agent Marlay Saccar, whom Hywen had sent to Palanda Ire to gather information (→FSS, ASTTS). |
