Overview
Xtryllium is a vital component in Imperial Combine jump technology.
There is no known natural source of xtryllium, and all supplies in use by the Empire are manufactured. Because it is highly volatile, gravitationally reactive, and its manufacture requires both extreme conditions and rare elements, it is very difficult and very expensive to obtain. For this reason xtyrllium is sometimes called "the divine currency". It is a highly sought-after resource, not just across the many worlds of mankind, but throughout the galaxy at large. The current value of high grade xtryllium is just over ♁1.3 billion per refined kilo.
Territorial disputes between empires have a tendency to include or centre on worlds where xtryllium production is possible, although political efforts are usually made to suggest less self-interested motives. Actual open combat over the resource is actually rare, since this would be seen as overtly aggressive behaviour by all outside observers, possibly leading to a combined assault on the instigating party. In the wider galactic community, xtryllium theft is generally seen as being loutish.
The Imperial Combine's largest xtryllium production facilities are based on Earth, Ramm Stallahad, and Shuul. Several stockpiles exist which divide the empire's reserves amongst a number of supposedly secure locations. One such location is known to be on the surface of Ramm Stallahad (→TRD).
Non-Imperial worlds producing xtryllium tend to be at the heart of their respective empires. Riishi is an excellent example, with an output rivalling that of Shuul.
The governments of neighbouring powers often have mutual assurance agreements, which allow them to inspect and audit each other's production and storage facilities. This is intended to prevent any black market emerging for xtryllium (→WGSF).
